Career Tips This Week: True Grit Is Knowing When to Quit

Hello beautiful people,

Grit has become the new buzzword for success, and research shows that it really does matter. University of Pennsylvania psychologist Angela Duckworth studied people in challenging settings, such as rookie teachers in tough neighbourhood or salespeople new to their positions and discovered that one characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success. It was grit. Defined by Duckworth, grit means passion and sustained persistence in trying to achieve a goal over a very long haul, with no particular concern for rewards or recognition along the way.

To be gritty, however, we need to have the courage to fail, to be wrong, to start over again, most importantly, with lessons learned. While the business world often believes grit as an inherent good, it can be dangerous to get so caught up in sticktoitiveness that you’re blind to the fact that you’re stuck. Harvard Psychologist Susan David pointed out that hanging on to unrealistic goals (usually driven by unexamined emotions) is toxic and the worst kind of grit, which could lead to misery or missed opportunities. While the passion perspective of grit is important, it’s only healthy when we’re managing the passion, instead of letting it manage us. And to do so, we need to be emotionally agile to recognise that sometimes our values also evolve. After all, the most adaptive response to an unattainable goal would be goal adjustment, and to know whether we’re gritty about the right things.
